How to Receive Verification Codes Without Giving Out Your Personal Email

To receive a verification code without using your personal email, create a temporary email address, enter it in the site's form, and copy the code from that address's inbox. The site stores the temporary address in its database, not yours. It works well for one-off sign-ups, but not for accounts you'll need to recover later.

What is an email verification code, and why do sites ask for one?

An email verification code is a number or short string that a site sends you to confirm that the address you gave exists and that you have access to it. It usually arrives seconds after you sign up or request a login, and it almost always expires within a few minutes.

Sites ask for it to prevent sign-ups with made-up addresses and to have a way to reach you later. That second reason is exactly the one you want to control: if you only need to get in once, there's no need to give them a permanent line to your main inbox. If this is your first time using this kind of address, what a temporary email is and when to use one gives you the full picture.

How do you receive the code, step by step?

With Mawlio, the whole process takes less than a minute, and you don't need to sign up.

  1. Open Mawlio. Without an account, you get 2 free 1-hour addresses; with a free account (email and password or Google), you get 5 credits and can request more.
  2. Tap Create email and give the address a name that reminds you of the site, for example "gardening forum." That way you'll find it quickly if you have several.
  3. Copy the address with the copy button instead of typing it by hand.
  4. Paste it into the site's sign-up form and submit it.
  5. Go back to Mawlio and open that address's inbox. The code is highlighted; tap Copy and paste it into the site.
  6. If the site sends a confirmation link instead of a code, open it straight from the message.

Without signing up, you get 2 free 1-hour addresses: one @mawlio.com and one of a second address type. An hour is usually more than enough for a code, which normally expires much sooner.

Why isn't the verification code arriving?

When a code doesn't arrive, it's almost always for one of these reasons, and each one has a fix:

  • The site is slow to send it. Some services queue their emails. Wait a minute and refresh your inbox before requesting another code.
  • The address was mistyped. One extra period or letter is enough for the message to get lost. Copy it again and paste it.
  • You requested the code before creating the address. Mawlio's inbox only shows emails that arrived after you got the address. If the site sent it earlier, request a new one.
  • The address has already expired. If the hour is up, the address is no longer yours. Create another one or, if it's still active and you think you'll need it a while longer, extend it before it expires.
  • The site doesn't accept temporary emails. Some services block these domains and don't even send the message. In that case, see the next section.
  • The site wants an SMS, not an email. A temporary email can't receive text messages, and Mawlio doesn't offer phone numbers. If the site insists on a number, first read what temporary phone numbers for receiving SMS are.

What should you do if the site rejects temporary addresses?

If a site rejects temporary addresses, the best thing to do is respect that decision and use a permanent address. Many services filter out disposable domains by design, and changing the name before the @ won't help when the filter is based on the domain.

Also think about whether you'll use the service long term. If you will, a temporary address wasn't a good fit anyway, because you wouldn't be able to recover the account. For those cases, use your regular email or a permanent alias from your email provider. In how to protect your email privacy you'll find other ways to expose your real address less.

When should you not receive codes with a temporary email?

Don't use a temporary email to verify accounts you'll need to recover: banking, work, government services, stores where you keep your order history, or services with important files. If you forget your password, the reset link will go to that address, and by then it may no longer be yours.

It's important to understand why. At Mawlio, once an address expires, it can be assigned to someone else, and it never comes back to you. The new owner starts with an empty inbox and can't see your previous emails, but they would receive any "reset your password" email the site sends afterward. Extending the address only delays that moment; it doesn't prevent it.

Don't use it to repeat free trials by creating new accounts, either. That usually violates the service's terms. If you just want to try something without getting flooded with promotions, we have a guide on signing up for free trials without filling your inbox.

How long should you keep the address active?

For a one-time code, the free hour is usually enough. If you think the site will send you something else over the next few days, like a download link or an order confirmation, you can extend the address with credits:

ExtensionCost in creditsWhen it makes sense
1 hour1The code is slow or you need to repeat the process
1 day1You're expecting a second email today or tomorrow
1 week3A shipment or download that arrives within days
1 month8A trial subscription you want to keep an eye on
1 year50Long-term use that doesn't require account recovery

The new expiration is counted from the moment you extend. Buying credits by card is coming soon.

What best practices should you follow?

A few habits prevent almost every problem:

  • One address per site. If a service starts spamming you, you'll know exactly who it was.
  • Name each address after the site where you used it.
  • Copy the code quickly. Most expire within a few minutes.
  • Reply from the temporary address if the site asks you to confirm something by email. With a free account, Mawlio lets you reply, forward, or write emails without revealing your personal email.
  • Don't use temporary addresses for banking, work, or government services.

Frequently asked questions

Can the site see my personal email if I use a temporary address?

No. The site only gets the temporary address you entered in its form. Your personal email stays in your Mawlio account and isn't shared with the sites where you use the address.

How long does it take for the code to arrive?

It depends on the site sending it. Many arrive within seconds, but some services take a minute or two. Wait a bit and refresh your inbox before requesting another one.

Can I use the same temporary address for several sites?

You can, but it's better to use one per site. That way you know who's emailing you, and if one of them leaks your data, the rest of your sign-ups aren't affected.

Does Mawlio receive SMS codes?

No. Mawlio only receives email and doesn't offer phone numbers.

If you have a sign-up waiting, get a free address on Mawlio and receive the code without touching your main inbox.
