What Is a Temporary Email and When Should You Use One?

A temporary email (also called a disposable email) is an email address that receives messages for a limited time and then stops working. You can use it to sign up for a site, get a code, or download a file without handing over your personal email. It makes sense when you don't need that service to contact you again and you won't have to recover the account later.

How does a temporary email work behind the scenes?

A temporary email works like any other email address, except it comes with an expiration date. There are three parts:

  • An address that receives mail. The service controls a domain (for example, @mawlio.com) and a server that accepts mail sent to that domain, just like Gmail or Outlook would.
  • A web inbox. You read your messages on the service's website or app, without setting up an email client: subject, sender, content, links, and attachments.
  • An expiration. Every address has a time limit. When it runs out, the address is no longer tied to you and its messages disappear from your inbox.

Not every service handles privacy the same way. Some work without an account and act as public mailboxes: anyone who types the same address can see what arrives. At Mawlio, each address stays linked to your account while it's active, and the inbox only shows emails that arrived after you got the address.

What is it for, and when should you use it?

A temporary email is a good fit for one-time sign-ups or for sites you don't trust yet. If that site suffers a data breach or floods you with promotions, the hit lands on an address that no longer exists, not on your main inbox.

Common use cases:

If your goal is to show up in third-party databases as little as possible, a temporary email is only one piece of the puzzle. In how to sign up for websites anonymously and how to protect your email privacy you'll find other measures that work well alongside it.

When should you not use a temporary email?

Don't use a temporary email for any account you'll need to recover later: banking, work, government services, stores where you keep your order history, or services where you store files. The reason is simple: if you forget your password, the site will send the reset link to that address, and by then it won't be yours anymore.

There's one more risk worth knowing about. At Mawlio, once an address expires, it can be assigned to someone else; it never comes back to you. That means a "reset your password" email sent later could reach another user. What is guaranteed is that the new owner starts with an empty inbox: they can't see the emails you received. But anything that arrives after the reassignment is theirs.

It's also not a good idea for:

  • Services that will send you invoices, warranties, or important notices.
  • Free trials you want to repeat by creating new accounts. That usually violates the service's terms, and it's not a use we recommend. If you just want to try something without getting buried in emails, see how to sign up for free trials without filling your inbox.
  • SMS verification. A temporary email can't receive text messages, and Mawlio doesn't offer phone numbers. If a site asks for your number, first read what temporary phone numbers for receiving SMS are and their limitations.

How is it different from a permanent alias or email forwarding?

The main difference is how long the address lasts and where the messages end up. A temporary email is short-lived and has its own inbox; an alias or a forwarding rule lasts until you turn it off and delivers messages to your regular email.

Some providers, like Gmail, offer a middle ground: they deliver emails sent to variations like yourname+store@gmail.com to your inbox. It's handy for filtering, but it doesn't hide your address: anyone can remove the part after the "+" and see your real email.

What should you do if a site rejects temporary emails?

If a site rejects temporary emails, the right move is to respect that decision and sign up with a permanent address. Many services block disposable domains on purpose, often using public lists maintained by the community, such as the disposable-email-domains repository on GitHub, whose stated goal is to help sites filter out these kinds of addresses.

What you can do:

  1. Ask yourself whether you'll use this service long term. If the answer is yes, a temporary email wasn't the right tool anyway: once it expires, you won't be able to receive the password reset link.
  2. Use your personal email or a permanent alias from your email provider if privacy is a concern.
  3. Don't try to get around the block. Changing the name before the @ won't help if the filter is based on the domain, and looking for ways to evade it may violate the site's terms.

How do you create a temporary email with Mawlio?

You don't need to sign up: without an account, you can get 2 free 1-hour addresses on your device, one @mawlio.com and one of a second address type. If you want more, create a free account with an email and password or with Google: you get 5 credits, you can hold 2 free 1-hour addresses at a time (once the hour is up, you can request another), and your addresses follow you even if you switch networks or devices.

  1. Open Mawlio. You can start without an account or sign in if you already have one.
  2. Tap Create email and type what the address is for, for example "photography forum."
  3. If you choose @mawlio.com, you can decide what goes before the @ (1 to 30 letters, numbers, periods, hyphens, or underscores) or let it be generated at random. Some names are reserved, such as admin, soporte, or info.
  4. Copy the address and paste it into the site's form.
  5. Go back to your inbox. If a verification code arrives, it's highlighted so you can copy it with one tap; you'll also see links and attachments.
  6. If you need to reply, forward, or write a new email, a free account lets you do it from the temporary address without revealing your personal email.
  7. When you're done, let it expire or extend it if you still need it.

How long does an address last, and how do you extend it?

Every Mawlio address lasts 1 hour by default. If you need more time, you can extend it with credits:

ExtensionCost
1 hour1 credit
1 day1.5 credits
1 week3 credits
1 month8 credits
1 year50 credits

An extra address beyond your free allowance costs 1 credit for @mawlio.com and 1.5 credits for iCloud, and lasts 1 hour. You can top up by card or crypto from US$2 (10 credits), and US$5 gets you 30. See all the details on the pricing page. Keep in mind that extending only delays the expiration: when the address finally expires, the same rules apply as with any other, so even a one-year address isn't a good idea for accounts you'll need to recover.

Frequently asked questions

Using a temporary email to protect your privacy when signing up is common practice. What matters is how you use it: it shouldn't be used to deceive, commit fraud, or violate a service's terms, such as repeating a free trial with new accounts.

Can I send emails from a temporary address?

With Mawlio, yes, with a free account. You can reply, forward, or write new emails from the temporary address, and the recipient will see that address, not your personal email.

What happens to my emails when the address expires?

The address and its messages disappear from your inbox. If the address is later assigned to someone else, that person starts with an empty inbox and can't see your previous emails, but they will receive anything that arrives from that point on.

Do I need to create an account to use Mawlio?

No. Without signing up you can get 2 free 1-hour addresses, and Mawlio never learns your personal email. If you create a free account (with an email and password or with Google), you can request more addresses, extend them, and reply from them; the sites where you use the temporary address never see the email you signed up with.

If you want to try it on your next one-off sign-up, get your free address on Mawlio, no sign-up needed, and have it ready in seconds.
